Following the previous Devolution update published on the 7th January 2025, Suffolk County Council held an extraordinary meeting on 9th January of councillors, and a meeting of its Cabinet, to debate and then decide on whether or not to put Suffolk forward for the government's new devolution and reorganisation programme.
The Suffolk County Council's Cabinet agreed to recommend Suffolk for inclusion in the government's Devolution Priority Programme (DPP), which would see the creation of a directly elected Mayor (likely covering Suffolk and Norfolk) and the replacement of existing council structures with a streamlined unitary council being set up.
Residents may be aware that the Government has published its White Paper proposing a reorganisation of Local Government and the creation of Mayoral Strategic Authorities and unitary councils to replace the current structure of District and County Councils by the end of this parliamentary term.
